What is zoning?
Zoning is a legislative method of regulating land use by the division of political subdivision into districts, and then enacting uniform regulations to control the uses within the district.
Who administers zoning?
Zoning in Richland County is administered by the local political subdivisions. All the municipalities and thirteen of the eighteen townships in Richland County are zoned. Richland County Regional Planning assisted all the Townships draft their zoning ordinances and continues to advice and train Township zoning officials on zoning matters.
Purposes of zoning are:
- to use land for its most suitable purpose
- to protect or maintain property values
- to promote public health and safety
- to protect the environment
- to manage aesthetics
- orderly development
- economic development
